Last summer, Lorne planted 6 tomato plants that grew to be over 7 feet tall. We had an enormous crop of both red and green tomatoes but we ended up having to throw a lot out. I even made a batch of green tomato pickle relish that we haven't managed to eat yet, even though I gave some away!Ergo, this spring I suggested that we only do 3 or 4 plants. However, "he" ended up getting double the plants we had last year - 12 - so we now have an extremely enormous crop of tomatoes! They're all still green, but eventually, they will ripen and we'll be giving them away! Let's hope we don't get an early fall and they all end up rotting on the vines! The photo only shows part of the crop, too!
Last weeked, Daughter #1 stopped by with the two grandchildren and they were so excited to see these enormous plants. They spent at least half an hour helping 6'2" Lorne water them with his "special" water (full of some sort of growth enhancer). Sure was an easy way to entertain little ones!

ReplyDeleteThat was fun, nothing tastes better than home grown tomatoes. We have had a few already this year. Our dear neighbors share them with us. Oh so juicy and good.

The secret is to nip the growing tips out when they set four trusses of tomatoes. Stops them getting too huger and makes the tomatoes taste better. Honest. My dad told me that.
ReplyDeleteI read somewhere very recently that you're supposed to prune the vines to 2 or 3 plants per stalk. I don't actually GROW anything, tho, so that's FWIW.

Oh Leslie, I have great Empathy for you.... in the days when we grew tomatoes as a cash crop (waiting for our orchard to mature) tomatoes went on and on and on producing, and sometimes we were still picking tomatoes in October, praying for frost! Now they produce and are over and done with - born 50 years too early....

You are right that is an enormous tomato crop. I love tomatoes straight of the vine and besides giving them away, extras are good for tomato sauces and such. Great take on the letter E.

One thing about tomatoes, when the do well, the do really really really well. Have you tried taking off the tops and bottoms, slicing them once, then tossing them in a blender? Freeze 'em up then take them out to make home-made sauces. No parboiling and skinning required. You reduce them when you make the sauce. They store really easily in ziploc bags. Really compact in the freezer.

Those are Enormous Edibles. You'll have more than enough tomatoes for sure. I had to leave my garden for a week in this heat. My friend John will water twice for me, but with all the recent heat I'm not sure some of the delicate things will last. Oh well, you can only do so much. - Margy

ReplyDeleteYour grandbabies are simply adorable! Oh, the banes of living with a green-fingered man, I truly do feel your pain (grin). It's the courgettes this year - the size of marrows - endless piles he harvests for me. I no sooner invent another weird and wonderful way to use them up, than I turn around to be confronted with yet another mound screaming for attention! Our tomatoes are a little more manageable this year (fingers crossed).
