About Me

My photo
Delta, British Columbia, Canada
I took very early retirement from teaching in '06 and did some traveling in Europe and the UK before settling down to do some private tutoring. As a voracious reader, I have many books waiting in line for me to read. Tell me I shouldn't read something, and I will. I'm a happy, optimistic person and I love to travel and through that believe that life can be a continuous learning experience. I'm looking forward to traveling more some day. I enjoy walking, cycling, water aerobics & and sports like tennis, volleyball, and fastpitch/baseball. I'm just getting into photography as a hobby and I'm enjoying learning all the bits and bobs of my digital camera. My family is everything to me and I'm delighted to be the mother of two girls and the Gramma of a boy and a girl. I may be a Gramma, but I'm at heart just a girl who wants to have fun.

Poppies

Does anyone know if these are the kind of poppies that you get opium from? The plant showed up in my garden after having had a truckload of topsoil delivered - I think there must have been a seed or two in the soil, because I never had this type of poppy before. Each year in the past 3 years, there have been more and more flowers. The "green" actually looks like a thistle and is sort of prickly.

Hi Leslie
I don't know either but agree with Sylvia :)

Hi, Leslie, those are definitely Oriental poppies, but they're not opium poppies. Oriental poppies have sort of bristley leaves and stems. They're gorgeous. My mother used to grow those because she loved the colour. They will also grow uncultivated.

By the way, Leslie, I accidentally deleted my blog. I hit something and off it went into the ether. So I will have to set up another one. In the meantime, I can chat with you here.

Hope you're well and enjoying this gorgeous weather.

Hi Josie,
Hurry up and get your blog set up again so we can visit you there...Did you and Leslie ever get together?

Now, Leslie, despite what Josie said, I think the only way you can tell for sure is to smoke them. Then you can write a blog telling us about the effects. Just kidding, of course.

Hah! You read my mind! ;D I don't want to get hooked, though!

Josie..I did the same thing one time to my blog...one button and *POOF* all my posts etc off to cyber space....but, I started over and all was well again. It still hurts for a second tho....how fast ones work can be gone...forever. Don't you wonder where that work goes tho?? LOL.

Leslie: Sounds like the poppy dilema got figured out...I thought all poppies were opium so tells ya how much I knew...lol. I had poppies once...seeds from a friend...so they must of been the ornamental kind also because I do remember the green prickly stems also...makes one wonder what can be in our top soil tho huh??

Pretty Poppy tho.....

Further thought on this, Leslie. When I was director of an addictions recovery facility we could not serve the clients poppy seed buns or muffins because they would actually test 'hot' for drugs, even though the seeds don't come from opium poppies

Wow, Ian. That's interesting. Thx for commenting. (After reading some comments on your site, I thought I should acknowledge you here.) LOL

I do remember reading that somewhere..that when you apply for a new job do NOT eat any poppy seeds topped buns for?? a day or two?? Before your drug test. I wonder why you don't see more information on that on a job application.

Hi, Leslie. How are you? I'm terrible at keeping in touch with people, but will call you. (I think I have phone phobia).

I have posted another of my little paintings. You're welcome to pop by and have a look.

Have a great weekend! You will be retiring soon, won't you?

Hi Josie, there are 7 days of school left (officially) and I'm counting down. The Board presented me with a beautiful Seiko Pulsar watch today at assembly plus a HUGE cake to share with the staff. It what a big surprise. Tomorrow I'm going in to do report cards with my partner and do some packing. I have to pack up my Grade 4 stuff plus my French stuff so there's a lot there. We'll get together when I'm finished up with it all, okay?

Leslie, yes, we'll find a nice sunny deck somewhere and have a leisurely lunch.

Are you getting excited about the cruise? I definitely won't be going. My best school chum wants me to visit her in Scotland. She has just bought a new house in Aberdeen. But I want to hear all about the cruise. You will have to be sure to say hello to Richard for me. ;-)

Omigosh Josie! I am green with envy that you're going to Scotland. I did a tour in '98 and am dying to go back. Yes, we will get together and have a wonderful brunch or lunch maybe Bridges or the Boathouse...that type of place, watch the boats go by and savour the sights.

Hi, Leslie, I would love to give you drawing lessons. You would be amazed at the hidden talent that people have. In one of my drawing classes there was a Supreme Court Judge, actually he was the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia(!), and he had never drawn before. He was amazed to find that he was actually very good. Not that I am the best person to teach someone else, however.

Hope you're having a great weekend.

Hi, Leslie, How are you? I have posted pictures of my little treehouse in the city. Why don't you pop over and visit me?

Is this week the countdown for you?
