About Me

My photo
Delta, British Columbia, Canada
I took very early retirement from teaching in '06 and did some traveling in Europe and the UK before settling down to do some private tutoring. As a voracious reader, I have many books waiting in line for me to read. Tell me I shouldn't read something, and I will. I'm a happy, optimistic person and I love to travel and through that believe that life can be a continuous learning experience. I'm looking forward to traveling more some day. I enjoy walking, cycling, water aerobics & and sports like tennis, volleyball, and fastpitch/baseball. I'm just getting into photography as a hobby and I'm enjoying learning all the bits and bobs of my digital camera. My family is everything to me and I'm delighted to be the mother of two girls and the Gramma of a boy and a girl. I may be a Gramma, but I'm at heart just a girl who wants to have fun.

L is for LONGING

Longing is an emotion characterized by a strong feeling of desire. It's also the title of an unreleased Dusty Springfield album from 1974. I guess I'm dating myself with this, but I always loved her songs, full of passion and yearning. Here is my take on "longing" with this week's poem.

Longing

Longing is deep sapphire blue.

It looks like tender tears of dew.

It sounds like echoes of yesterday.

It smells like a Chinese food for one day.

It tastes like apple pie in the sky.

It feels like a mercenary magnet to iron.

Longing is unrequited desire.

And here is a taste of Dusty Springfield's unique style of longing in a song from 1967:

You are writing some very good poems. What does it say when I remember that song when it was new? I graduated from high school in 67. Must have been a good year. Where were you? - Margy

I adored Dusty too, she was so 'big'in the UK she even had her own TV show. She started her career with her brother Tom, they formed a group called The Springfields, their first big hit was called Island of dreams, I was fourteen then and my brother and i had a Dansette record player as a Christmas gift...Island of Dreams was the very first single recor, I had. It was a Christmas present, I was thrilled. We also got a version of Brenda Lee singing Rocking around the Christmas Tree and Harry Belafontee singing Little Donkey, A memorable Christmas indeed! Oh and Johnie Mathis's ' Chestnuts roasting on an open fire' (I think that was the first line), not title.
Such memories you have evoked in me im me Leslie. I wonder if there is a copy of Island of Dreams on You Tube....that was a 'longing song' too,,,check it uot Leslie, (if you havn't already)!

I don't remember this song, but I like it.
I like this sentence in your poem: "it tastes like apple pie in the sky"...There was a series on BBC called "Pie in the Sky"It was about a detective who was also the owner of a restaurant.
You have explained very well what longing means! Good post.

Longing is such an illusive concept but you described it very well in your poem. I enjoyed reading it to the background of Dusty’s song. Her accompanying music was perfect!

Nice descriptive poem, Leslie, and although I don't remember Dusty (too old - I was just going back to take Philosophy classes after my children were all in school) but I like the song and the songstress.

I love the 50's and 60's music too. I remember Dusty, but not as much as I would like. We left England in 1960 and were immersed in studies, making a living and settling into a new country. No TV at that point and not much time to listen to the radio. Even the Beatles were not too well known to us. Busy days but more than worthwhile.

The colors, the feel, the memories, the taste of longing...a beautiful piece. This prompt also took me to music. It must be in the air.

Poem and song make a perfect fit. I wonder why they did not release the album when it was made.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh (happy sigh), the kids and I used to sing along to this, that and her greatest hits, on the school runs!

Some classics never age.

What a wonderfully evocative poem, too - you have such a creative imagination.
