About Me

My photo
Delta, British Columbia, Canada
I took very early retirement from teaching in '06 and did some traveling in Europe and the UK before settling down to do some private tutoring. As a voracious reader, I have many books waiting in line for me to read. Tell me I shouldn't read something, and I will. I'm a happy, optimistic person and I love to travel and through that believe that life can be a continuous learning experience. I'm looking forward to traveling more some day. I enjoy walking, cycling, water aerobics & and sports like tennis, volleyball, and fastpitch/baseball. I'm just getting into photography as a hobby and I'm enjoying learning all the bits and bobs of my digital camera. My family is everything to me and I'm delighted to be the mother of two girls and the Gramma of a boy and a girl. I may be a Gramma, but I'm at heart just a girl who wants to have fun.

F is for FUNNY FACTS re FAHRENHEIT & FLAG

I laughed so hard when I read a posting on Bluerad's blog "Everything Awesome." Check it out here to read the top reasons for living in all the different provinces and to read a few good Canadian jokes.  But what I thought was the funniest (but tongue-in-cheek) and that my American friends will surely find funny is the following:

The Official Canadian Temperature Conversion Chart

50° Fahrenheit (10° C)
· Californians shiver uncontrollably.
· Canadians plant gardens.

35° Fahrenheit (1.6° C)
· Italian cars won't start.
· Canadians drive with the windows down.

32° Fahrenheit (0° C)
· American water freezes.
· Canadian water gets thicker.

0° Fahrenheit (-17.9° C)
· New York City landlords finally turn on the heat.
· Canadians have the last cookout of the season.

-60° Fahrenheit (-51° C)
· Santa Claus abandons the North Pole.
· Canadian Girl Guides sell cookies door-to-door.

-109.9° Fahrenheit (-78.5° C)
· Carbon dioxide freezes makes dry ice.
· Canadians pull down their earflaps.

-173° Fahrenheit (-114° C)
· Ethyl alcohol freezes.
· Canadians get frustrated when they can't thaw the keg.

-459.67° Fahrenheit (-273.15° C)
· Absolute zero; all atomic motion stops.
· Canadians start saying, "Cold, eh?"
· Vancouver Canucks finally beat the Chicago Black Hawks in the playoffs.

-500° Fahrenheit (-295° C)
· Hell freezes over.
· The Toronto Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup.

A friend and I were talking about the Canadian flag when we were watching the Olympics and both of us felt that it isn't all that fabulous.  We both remember the days when we had the Red Ensign and we much preferred it even though it was never the "official" flag of Canada. Now we have the maple leaf flag that was made our official flag in 1965 under the auspices of our then Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson.  At least our provincial flag (British Columbia) still has part of the Union Jack, which pleases me because it reminds me of my British heritage.   The first flag below was Canada's flag beginning in 1868 (the year of confederation), the next became our flag in 1921, and finally our official flag in 1965.  Below that is my provincial flag, which I quite like because it represents not only our connection to Great Britain, but also the sun and sea.

I'd be interested in your feelings on the above flags.  Which do you like the best?

Finally, we must not forget our fabulous leader, Mrs. Nesbitt and her current pilot Roger, who facilitate our fun each week with ABC Wednesday.  If you're new here, please familiarize yourself with the "Rules & Regulations" of this meme found here.  Some of Mrs. N's friends help fulfill her wish to visit each and every contributor each and every week.  We follow the rules, field questions, and function as a team to further ABCW and help it to flourish.  Have a fantastic, fabulous and fascinating week, my friends.  I'm having a fun-filled holiday and will be back next week with my post for the letter G.  Sorry, though, not to be able to visit everyone!

I laughed out loud at the fun temperature facts. Interesting about the evolution of your flag. Great F day post. Carver, ABC-Wed-Team

funny stuff! I always preferred the maple leaf because it was a cleaner design. The others seem cluttered.

I haven't done my ABC post yet, but have Fallen so Far behind in my comments, want to leave a Few for some of the Fantastically Faithful bloggers who always Find Funny and Fascinating ways to amuse readers. The conversion table was hilarious, and the flags gave me Food for thought. I guess i like "cluttered" best as i prefer the first and last flags. I remember how sad my Father was when the new Flag was chosen. I do appreciate the simplicity of the maple leaf, but.. perhaps there is a certain elegance in the design that is missing for me.

I had no idea that Canada had "processed" so many flags! I do love the maple leaf design because it is unique to Canada, but love your provincial one and all its symbolism too!

Funny and factual. I have to say I like the flags with the Union Jack on them.

Nice F post to laugh about. Minus 500 and hell freezes over; reminds me of the Eagles :) The present Canadian flag I guess would be the one I prefer if I were Canadian.

Funny Farenheight Facts. I like the flags with the Union Jack on them. But flags are like relatives -- you're pretty well stuck with them. The Union Jack is so hard to draw correctly.

A friend new to NY drove to Canada and said your roads are very good. You can fly your flag high.

In the UK, whenever it is cold the media always gives the temperature in Celsius, but in Fahrenheit when it's hot!

OMG, that's hysterical! Thank you for the LOL! I have to agree with Roger, I like the maple leaf flag best.

Great post, Leslie. Loved the conversion table. I prefer the first flag, - love the flag but not terribly impressed with the Maple Leaf design.
