About Me

Delta, British Columbia, Canada
I took very early retirement from teaching in '06 and did some traveling in Europe and the UK before settling down to do some private tutoring. As a voracious reader, I have many books waiting in line for me to read. Tell me I shouldn't read something, and I will. I'm a happy, optimistic person and I love to travel and through that believe that life can be a continuous learning experience. I'm looking forward to traveling more some day. I enjoy walking, cycling, water aerobics & and sports like tennis, volleyball, and fastpitch/baseball. I'm just getting into photography as a hobby and I'm enjoying learning all the bits and bobs of my digital camera. My family is everything to me and I'm delighted to be the mother of two girls and the Gramma of a boy and a girl. I may be a Gramma, but I'm at heart just a girl who wants to have fun.

M is for Magical Music

One of the many things I've been working on lately has been music for the wedding.  The song "Do You Believe in Magic" by the Lovin' Spoonfuls came to mind as I mused about all the choices we have for our wedding music.  I do believe that the right music will bring a magical quality to any event, especially to a wedding.  Have a listen.

Lorne is extremely knowledgeable about music, having a collection of probably close to 500 CDs and another 400-500 LPs.  Each piece is in absolutely mint condition, so we have lots to choose from.  We are not having a church wedding, so we're keeping the music more contemporary (rather than traditional or religious).  So I will be walking down the (mini) aisle to a Roy Todd original piano piece called "Radiant as a Bride," (listen here) we will sign the registry to Louis Armstrong's rendition of "It's a Wonderful World," and we will leave the ceremony to James Taylor's "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You."

One of the CDs we're playing during the reception is called "Unforgettable Sax" with Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable" the first piece of music up - a very appropriate piece of music for us. Also, Lorne has promised to choose the first dance music and I have a feeling he'll choose Van Morrison's haunting "Someone Like You" from his Still on Top - The Greatest Hits CD.   I love the rhythm and the melody and the words are also very appropriate for us. And here are the lyrics and you can hear it here.
I'VE BEEN SEARCHING A LONG TIME
FOR SOMEONE EXACTLY LIKE YOU
I'VE BEEN TRAVELING ALL AROUND THE WORLD
WAITING FOR YOU TO COME THROUGH
SOMEONE LIKE YOU MAKE IT ALL WORTHWHILE
SOMEONE LIKE YOU KEEP ME SATISFIED
SOMEONE EXACTLY LIKE YOU
I'VE BEEN TRAVELING A HARD ROAD
BABY LOOKING FOR SOMEONE EXACTLY LIKE YOU
I'VE BEEN CARRYING MY HEAVY LOAD
WAITING FOR THE LIGHT TO COME SHINING THROUGH
SOMEONE LIKE YOU MAKE IT ALL WORTHWHILE
SOMEONE LIKE YOU MAKE ME SATISFIED
SOMEONE EXACTLY LIKE YOU
I'VE BEEN DOING SOME SOUL SEARCHING
TO FIND OUT WHERE YOU'RE AT
I'VE BEEN UP AND DOWN THE HIGHWAY
IN ALL KINDS OF FOREIGN LANDS
SOMEONE LIKE YOU MAKE IT ALL WORTHWHILE
SOMEONE LIKE YOU KEEP ME SATISFIED
SOMEONE EXACTLY LIKE YOU
I'VE BEEN ALL AROUND THE WORLD
MARCHING TO THE BEAT OF A DIFFERENT DRUM
BUT JUST LATELY I HAVE REALIZED
THE BEST IS YET TO COME
SOMEONE LIKE YOU MAKE IT ALL WORTHWHILE
SOMEONE LIKE YOU KEEP ME SATISFIED
SOMEONE EXACTLY LIKE YOU

At the after party, we'll take along some of Lorne's best CDs so we can cut a rug on our friends' patio while we whoop it up.  Whatever we end up choosing, I know the music will make the entire day a magical experience for us both.

I was going to say that I never listen to music, but I have a feeling you would not believe me...
That Lovin' Spoonful song I blogged about just last month, among others.
BTW, John Sebastian and Nat King Cole share a birthday, St. Patrick's Day, 25 years apart (1944, 1919)
Good stuff, Leslie!

Fantastic! Music has such amazing power over the heart and mind. It's not wonder we ponder the choice of music for special events. I love the lyrics you posted and think it will make a perfect first dance song. :-)

Looks like a great line-up of music for your marriage event. I love music and I might be able to sing that lovin spoonful song without the lyrics in front of me. That tells you how old I am...

Ah, I love "Do You Believe in Magic." I used to drive deliveries for a living, and that's a great song on a spring day with the windows down on a long highway. Makes me feel like the world's an alright place.

Oh I LOVE the lyrics for your song--so happy for you. I went to a wedding a few years ago where when the bride and groom exited the alter the song "At Last My Love Has Come Along" was played. It was a jazz tune and cannot think of the singer now but it was PERFECT. Music is a very special part of my life as well.

I feel so bad. When we moved north from Los Angeles I got rid of all the old records, even some dating back to the 1930-40s that I got from parents. You just have to make choices I guess. Wayne and I love music on the radio. We use satellite as well as the local channels. - Margy

One aspect of our wedding in 2005 was being able to choose contemporary music that held meaning for us both. And we had a live saxophonist playing while everyone tucked into their meal. I adore the saxophone - it just gets to me inside!

You are clearly excited and so you should be, Leslie. I wish you both every happiness as you finalise your plans. May all be well.

And, yes, we should meet if you step onto UK soil again - we're not far from Bristol airport or we can hop over to Wales - whatever!
