About Me

Delta, British Columbia, Canada
I took very early retirement from teaching in '06 and did some traveling in Europe and the UK before settling down to do some private tutoring. As a voracious reader, I have many books waiting in line for me to read. Tell me I shouldn't read something, and I will. I'm a happy, optimistic person and I love to travel and through that believe that life can be a continuous learning experience. I'm looking forward to traveling more some day. I enjoy walking, cycling, water aerobics & and sports like tennis, volleyball, and fastpitch/baseball. I'm just getting into photography as a hobby and I'm enjoying learning all the bits and bobs of my digital camera. My family is everything to me and I'm delighted to be the mother of two girls and the Gramma of a boy and a girl. I may be a Gramma, but I'm at heart just a girl who wants to have fun.

Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit

One great thing you have to say about 1967 was the music. The Doors were riding high on the charts. The Jefferson Airplane and Van Morrison were not far behind, and then there was a certain Mr. Hendrix and those four boys from Liverpool and their Lonely Hearts Club Band. The local paper is running a feature on the summer of love - 1967 and have chosen the 10 top songs of the time:

Whiter Shade of Pale -- Procol Harum
San Franciscan Nights -- The Animals
For What It's Worth -- Buffalo Springfield
Light My Fire -- Doors
Brown Eyed Girl -- Van Morrison
Somebody to Love -- Jefferson Airplane
Heroes and Villains -- Beach Boys
All You Need Is Love -- The Beatles
Purple Haze -- Jimi Hendrix
San Francisco (Flowers in Your Hair) -- Scott Mckenzie

I love ALL these songs, but have a particularly strong affinity towards the group Jefferson Airplane and Procol Harum because ... well ... I remember some wonderful times in the backseat of a car with a certain someone. LOL One of my favourite songs is White Rabbit and for those of you who don't remember or who weren't around at the time, it's about taking drugs. However, its haunting melody is hypnotic and unforgettable. I found this rendition of White Rabbit on youtube and hope you enjoy it, even if it's the first time you've heard it.

Leslie, that's fabulous. I remember where I was the very first time I ever heard that song.

(It wasn't the back seat of a car, however...) Ha!

Great memories.

It wasn't in the back seat of a car for me either! heehee I remember Donnetta, her brother and me out in the field chopping cotton to "San Francisco" and how we laughed about the lyric, "people in motion," and sitting on her Granny's porch listening to Jefferson Airplane and dreaming our lives. Gosh, those summer nights sure were hot. Thanks for the memories, Leslie!

The critics would call Marty Balins the wimpy rocker, however, I thought he brought a particular style to Jefferson Airplane, particularly his love ballads.

I hate to say this...I know the songs I have listened to them but I don't think I appreciate them the same way as you do....I was only 6 in 1967....I think I might have still been listening to nursery rhymes

Isn't it amazing the time warp a song can produce? I don't know where I was when I heard this first, but hearing it again brought me back to a darkened room. A party? Not a car, that's for sure.

I heard Grace slick sing this live in Philadelphia after they became Jefferson Starship...too bad she had fed her head a bit to much that night.

Peace

Forget the mushrooms. There's a great article about Paul Kantner and his classic Rickenbacker sound at RickRedux.com.
