About Me

My photo
Delta, British Columbia, Canada
I took very early retirement from teaching in '06 and did some traveling in Europe and the UK before settling down to do some private tutoring. As a voracious reader, I have many books waiting in line for me to read. Tell me I shouldn't read something, and I will. I'm a happy, optimistic person and I love to travel and through that believe that life can be a continuous learning experience. I'm looking forward to traveling more some day. I enjoy walking, cycling, water aerobics & and sports like tennis, volleyball, and fastpitch/baseball. I'm just getting into photography as a hobby and I'm enjoying learning all the bits and bobs of my digital camera. My family is everything to me and I'm delighted to be the mother of two girls and the Gramma of a boy and a girl. I may be a Gramma, but I'm at heart just a girl who wants to have fun.

K is for Keepsakes

Gee, we're almost halfway through the alphabet for the 5th time! This week, the letter K is brought to you by Mrs. Nesbitt, our ABC Wednesday hostess.
In keeping with the theme of my new life with Lorne, I'm showing you some of his keepsakes. And the first thing actually begins with the letter K - keys. He loves antiques, and when he saw these keys in an antique store, he just had to get them. When he showed them to me, I said "Oh, why don't you choose one that would look good on a silver chain and you can give it to me saying 'It's the key to my heart.' Wouldn't that be romantic?" And he actually agreed! So, I'm waiting.

Last Sunday, we took a load to the storage locker and came home with another box. Inside were 6 ducK decoys. I chose this one to show you because it's the oldest and most "antiquey" looking one. We put it by the front door to use as a doorstop. The others are scattered around the main floor living area, but I think I just might have to hide some of them. A few months ago, he said that "I" had too many nicK-nacKs around but lately, I'm finding a few too many of "his." Click to enlarge.

Finally, I'd like to show you his grandfather's lighter. His grandfather had the same initials as Lorne (except for the middle initial, that is). I think it's quite unique and very macho looking. Of course, we don't need a lighter like this since we don't smoke and we use those long-handled ones for the barbecue. But it is Kind of a conversation piece and it's fun to hear stories of the past about his family. Click to enlarge.

Oh yes, you might have been wondering about the wedding we attended a week ago. I said I'd post photos, but I don't think I should as the people might object. But here is one that fits in to our K-Day. The KISS:

Congratulations go out to Jon and Tiffany, hoping they have a wonderful honeymoon in Cuba!

I love keys. I always wonder what they opened, what was behind the door or the lid, what treasure was there to be found.
Great K

When I saw the ring of skelton keys that really brought back some memories. The first house I owned was built in 1917 and the seller had lived in it since 1939. She and her husband bought it from the couple who built it during WWI.

Every lock used a key just like the ones you pictured! I remember using keys like this at my grandmother's house but actually owning a house that used such locks was, well, most interesting! Heh!

Eventually the locks were replaced with modern ones but the old ones always had a charm to them.

I still have the keys some place! I was never good at throwing such things away.

Sounds like you had a good time at the wedding and was interested to hear they are honeymooning in Cuba! Here in the states, well...we are not allowed to travel to Cuba and that is sad.

I mentioned my grandparents -- they traveled to Cuba in the 1950s and had a wonderful time.

Of course, the entire world travels to and from Cuba with no problems -- that is, unless you live in the United States! Heh! Oh well....

Take care.

What a huge set of keys makes you wonder what they opened. But then keys seem to have a life of their own and seem to accumulate for no reason even though you cannot figure what they open.

Well, this is funny, Leslie--I have a cousin Tiffany who's also married to a Jon:) Love the antiques, especially the lighter. I like antiques that have a story behind them, especially something passed down through the family.

I lose keys, so it's frustrating. we'd never need keys if everyone were honest. But In do like them.
A KISS on the other hand - I LOVE the kiss.

Thanks for visiting my post about the King. When I was really litte I used to call my mom's nick-nacks no-nos. I bet you can guess what she said when I tried to touch them. When the cleaning lady (also my babysitter) tried to dust, I told her, "Don't touch Mommy's no-nos." Such a precocious child I was. - Margy

Lovely photo of the kiss!

I love knickknacks! I have too many, but over the years I've refined my taste and weeded some out. Love the duck decoys! And the keys. I have keys. ;)
