About Me

My photo
Delta, British Columbia, Canada
I took very early retirement from teaching in '06 and did some traveling in Europe and the UK before settling down to do some private tutoring. As a voracious reader, I have many books waiting in line for me to read. Tell me I shouldn't read something, and I will. I'm a happy, optimistic person and I love to travel and through that believe that life can be a continuous learning experience. I'm looking forward to traveling more some day. I enjoy walking, cycling, water aerobics & and sports like tennis, volleyball, and fastpitch/baseball. I'm just getting into photography as a hobby and I'm enjoying learning all the bits and bobs of my digital camera. My family is everything to me and I'm delighted to be the mother of two girls and the Gramma of a boy and a girl. I may be a Gramma, but I'm at heart just a girl who wants to have fun.

Y is for YELLOW

When I think of the colour YELLOW, I think of spring and summer and sunshine and all the beautiful flowers that bloom to brighten our days.  It's like waking up, stretching and yawning, to a new year of visual pleasures.

"Yellow evokes the shine of the sun and is found throughout nature and the man-made world as a color that commands attention. This highly visible hue is found on everything from bumblebees to school buses, traffic signs to highlighters. Misbehaving soccer players are shown yellow as a warning, and Tour de France racers know the man in yellow is the rider to beat."  (from "Life in Color: Yellow" National Geographic)

Yellow is also a very difficult colour to photograph because you have to have the exposure and saturation right.  I'm still using my auto focus so I have to tweak a lot of my yellow photos in Photoshop and even then, they don't look quite right.  But I'm learning all the time.

Before you take a look at the slideshow of my "yellow" photos, don't forget to give a loud yippee to the youthful Mrs. Nesbitt (creator of ABCW) and the yummy Roger (our administrator). And don't forget, too, that we're always yearning for new contributors to ABC Wednesdays so tell all your friends to check us out!  Now, on with the show and don't forget to turn up your sound to the music of "Walking On Sunshine."

Do you know what drives me nuts? People who write, on a white sign, with yellow markers. I can't READ it. And I LOVE to be able to SEE yellow, on a darker background...

Now I know why gorse never shows up its true colour in my photographs. Love all your cheery yellow flowers, the 'pup' looks to have grown a lot.

So many great yellow pictures - the ones with the bees and the sunflower were my favorites! Actually, the yellow lab was my favorite then the bees!

Such luscious shades of yellow. I LOVE the car, my hubby had a baby blue '58 Chevy. Those cars were gorgeous. Yellow flowers are a real favorite today and yours are no exception.

Lemon yellow is kind of z crazy color -very right or very wrong in a painting;
cadmium yellow is even worse
Naples yellow is more subdued and leaning towards raw sienna, which makes it safer to deal with in landscapes;
aureolin is so transparent that you can almost hide your mistake when you're a watercolorist,
but ... I still love yellow!

we had a warm fuzzy week, and yellow was the top colour. Appropriate as it is mid winter here. I hope you will enjoy Dr Sun's garden.

Really enjoyed all the yellow photos in the slide show.

You asked whether a person can stay overnight at Mount Rushmore National Park.

There are no overnight accommodations at the park itself (to the best of my knowledge). However, the monument is close to a small town called Keystone and there are some cabins, motels and a hotel there.

Also, Custer State Park is close to the national park and there is camping allowed there.

I stayed in Rapid City which is 25 miles north of Keystone and on Interstate 90. Rapid City is a large enough town to have the usual assortment of restaurants, motels, etc.

Thanks for stopping by my blog - I have not done much lately but every so often I post something.

I always enjoy stopping by your blog as it is so well done.
