About Me

My photo
Delta, British Columbia, Canada
I took very early retirement from teaching in '06 and did some traveling in Europe and the UK before settling down to do some private tutoring. As a voracious reader, I have many books waiting in line for me to read. Tell me I shouldn't read something, and I will. I'm a happy, optimistic person and I love to travel and through that believe that life can be a continuous learning experience. I'm looking forward to traveling more some day. I enjoy walking, cycling, water aerobics & and sports like tennis, volleyball, and fastpitch/baseball. I'm just getting into photography as a hobby and I'm enjoying learning all the bits and bobs of my digital camera. My family is everything to me and I'm delighted to be the mother of two girls and the Gramma of a boy and a girl. I may be a Gramma, but I'm at heart just a girl who wants to have fun.

Hotter Than Hell

We have been having the MOST horrendous heat wave here in the Vancouver area! It's been in the mid-30's C or well into the 90's F, with no end in sight for at least another week. With all the fans going in the house, we still can't get any relief. Our sumers are always good but not this hot. Rather, it's usually in the mid-20's or mid to high 70's, which is a lot more bearable.

Click to enlarge photos - can you see the half moon in the sky? And the red sky over the North Shore mountains?

Last night, we resorted to driving (in the AC car) to the local beach down at Boundary Bay - took our collapsible chairs and a bit of a picnic supper and, with the breeze off the water, finally cooled down a bit. When we got home, I put on a shortie nightgown (that looks like a sun dress) and sat with my feet in a bucket of cold water while my sweetie watered the lawn and garden, periodically spraying me (accidently, of course!) with the mist. Oh, man! It felt so good - but don't tell him that I said that.

We are going again tonight and are going to stay until it's dark! And this time we're going to sit closer to the public restrooms so we won't have to go home so soon. And we're going to drink gallons of something or other! Hopefully, the little food stand will be open so we can get an ice-cream, too.

Note: Just home from spending time in a restaurant, drugstore, and grocery store trying to get cool and noticed the thermostat on the main drag read 100F/38C!!

Anyone else suffering like this?

It sounds like you've found the answer to staying cool!

Yes, Leslie, YES, we're feelin' the heat too! Try to imagine the inside of our greenhouses right now in this weather.....unbearable!

Oh, gosh Tamara! The humidity with this heat is unbearable enough, let alone in a greenhouse! Stay hydrated!

I am never much good in that kind of heat but this summer, although the forecast was to be a heatwave...... we have had continual rain throughout July and it is decidedly chilly. No way can we get dehydrated. more likely we will end up waterlogged!
Strange how all the weather systems have got mixed up!
Stay under the sprinkler!

Hi Leslie, that sounds horrendous. No we are not suffering, in fact it is the other way now...so much rain.

We did experience a heat wave a few weeks ago, couldn't breathe..didn't know what to do with ourselves!

How far is you beach? We live a few hours, which is a shame..but come to think of it, no I couldn't sit on a beach, it would be heaving..!!

My blogfriends in Oregon are suffering too.

Your beach visits are a great idea. And at least the water is there to paddle in . Wish I could transfer some NZ winter your way for a few hours a time.

Sending cooling thoughts, Michelle

I could sure use some of the warmth right about now. We can't seem to get above 24c at all and in the entire month of July we have had 8 rain free days. In Athens on the other hand, they are sweltering in 45c which is just a tad too hot for me. I hope it gets warmer here and Athens cools off a bit by the time I get there...ciao

We are very, very familiar with heat and humidity here in Florida! You do your hair and it's so smooth, walk outside and frizzies abound!

So, do you have A/C in your house? I ask because I know my dil in San Diego, CA doesn't because it is almost always cool there.

I believe you must thank El Nino for this. Not a very strong one either.
The trend is still downward, honestly. Our year is already bringing on Autumn.

Gosh, I shall never moan about our weather again! Necessity is the mother of invention, and you both appear to have come up with a few methods of managing the heat, so that it is at least bearable.

Hope it lets up a little for you soon.

Yeppers! Hot as heck here too.
Yesterday it hit 40 C here in town. Every night we get a wicked dry lightning storm with just a teensy bit of misty rain and the next day spot fires to clean up from the lightning and the heat starts up all over again.
Been like that for days. No campfires and tourists are not happy for this long weekend. Oh well. Strange weather, indeed.
Aaaargh!!
Keep cool!

Hi Leslie,
Is this unusual for Vancouver in Aug? It's been so cool here (CO) - into the 30's some nights. Come on down if you feel too hot!

We have the cold and the rain! If our weather could improve a bit and yours cool a bit, we'd all be fine!
