About Me

My photo
Delta, British Columbia, Canada
I took very early retirement from teaching in '06 and did some traveling in Europe and the UK before settling down to do some private tutoring. As a voracious reader, I have many books waiting in line for me to read. Tell me I shouldn't read something, and I will. I'm a happy, optimistic person and I love to travel and through that believe that life can be a continuous learning experience. I'm looking forward to traveling more some day. I enjoy walking, cycling, water aerobics & and sports like tennis, volleyball, and fastpitch/baseball. I'm just getting into photography as a hobby and I'm enjoying learning all the bits and bobs of my digital camera. My family is everything to me and I'm delighted to be the mother of two girls and the Gramma of a boy and a girl. I may be a Gramma, but I'm at heart just a girl who wants to have fun.

Y is for YACHT

Living as I do on the west coast of Canada, I see lots and lots of boats, especially sailboats gliding in the waters here. On any given day, you might see any number of boats as you drive along Pacific Avenue by English Bay. On windy days, especially, you'll see so many sailboats that you'll wonder how they manage to keep out of each other's way. Here's just one shot of the skyline of Vancouver with boats resting on a calm day.

I've never actually been on a sailboat in my entire life. We used to have a power boat that we'd use for water skiing or cruising on Shuswap Lake in the summers. And Lorne used to have his own sailboat, yellow, called "Daisy."

Here in my little village of Ladner, we actually have a Yacht Club! I went down to take a few photos of the boats moored in the little river harbour and realized that they weren't quite what I had in mind as a yacht. They're more like fishing boats, although there were a few sailboats, too.

If you can't afford to buy a boat, you can always rent one - or a kayak, through Kaymaran Adventure Tours right off the wharf in Ladner.

We've been talking about buying a sailboat some day in the near future. Since Lorne not only owned one in the past AND raced them, he knows everything possible about them. He even said he'd teach me to sail when I suggested my taking lessons.

However, sailboats can be very expensive. Lorne saw an old one, derelict, in the Steveston Yacht Club harbour and made an offer on it. He planned on restoring it to its former glory. But so far that deal hasn't come through. Then today, I found another one for sale. What do you think? Any real future for this one? (click to enlarge) They're only asking $7,000.00!!!

Actually, I think I must have champagne taste because this one (below) is more of what I have in mind when I think of sailing. (I stole this image off the web, but it's actually a sailboat sailing near Vancouver, BC. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to own a yacht!

Dream on, Leslie....

Ah yes a yacht would be quite nice. $7000. for that boat is a lot of money. It may be a money pit before it got fixed.
Great photos Leslie.

I have three friends with 30+' yacht and have had a rather nice sail or two of them. Just keep on wishing and someday a yacht will just come and adopt you when the time is right.
I just love your neck of the woods. Well done.

That's my dream -- to own a boat. My niece and I had dinner at Bridges tonight, and we saw lots of boats. *sigh*

Hi Leslie, It would be wonderful to own a yatch but after a very rough trip on a gullet in Turkey I'm afraid I'm now a confirmed landlubber.
I cannot recall if I congratulated you upon your recent engagement, so, if I didn't, my sincere congratulations to you both x
Life has been very hectic in 'Trubes' world as you will read next time you visit.
Congrats again.

Marvelous photos, aren't we all dream of a sail boat. But like what they say, a boat is a hole in the water for you to throw money at. Good luck!!

Our part of Cornwall is by the sea there are many boats of all shapes and sizes. We have a 26 foot sailing boat and it is so much fun. I have browsed back to 27 June and discovered that CONGRATULATIONS is in order to you and Lorne!

When I was a teenager, I had a friend whose Dad used to buy derelict boats and restore them, making them into pleasure craft and selling them on to supplement his income. We spent many happy hours down at the riverside.

Thanks for the memories!

I love all the pictures, and sailing can be fun but it does eat money I believe. Actually I have always wanted to live on a canal barge or a houseboat, rather like a water based caravan I suppose. I could enjoy the movement of water yet never set sail...too dangerous out there me hearty.

Hi Leslie.

i think most people dream of owning a boat someday. I wanted to own one for quite a long time. And last month, I was able to successfully buy my first boat, A trawler. Actually, there are a lot of affordable brand new and used ocean yachts for sale in the market. It would be best to check them online or ask another boat owner to get a good deal.

Also, you can also try to import boats from US or Europe. They manufacture quality boats that can be used for sailing and racing.

I hope you would be able to buy your first boat this year. Good Luck!
